Many women love the thought of having a vintage engagement ring. When it comes time to shop however, some women may be a bit confused about what to look for and what to ask for at the jewelry store. There are two gorgeous styles that it might be good to start with; an Asscher cut engagement ring, or a cushion cut engagement ring. These two types of rings are almost the opposite of one another, yet they are both beautiful and the vintage-looking.
When looking into the top of Asscher cut engagement rings, you will first notice that there are “steps” descending into the ring. These steps require very large facets to be cut into the bottom of the stone, which resembles a four sided pyramid.
This cut has four long sides, and four very short sides which are actually the corners of the stone which have been cut off.
Asscher cuts are very angular looking, and they often look best in a very simple, four-prong setting. Because of the large facets on this type of diamond cut, it is necessary for the diamond to be high quality and to have very few inclusions.
In contrast, cushion cut engagement rings are very round and soft looking. The top of a cushion cut diamond resembles the round top of a pillow. The facets on a cushion cut diamond are also very large, and so a high quality diamond is also required for this type of cut.
Cushion cuts have been around for over 150 years, and so some consider this type of diamond to be the most vintage-looking of all. They can be set in anything from a simple four-pronged setting to a more elaborate art deco type setting.
As you can see, both Asscher cut engagement rings and cushion cut engagement rings are wonderful types of vintage engagement rings to start with when you begin looking for your engagement ring. Once you see them in person, you are sure to decide that one of them will be just right for you.
